Frequently Asked Questions

Things we get asked a lot

You can complete a self-referral to access services at Starfish Child and Family Play Therapy. Click here to access the Referral Form. Lucy will be in touch to discuss your family's needs and determine whether our service is the right therapeutic fit.

Yes, Starfish Child and Family Play Therapy accepts NDIS funding for self-managed and plan-managed participants.

Our Play Therapy services align with the NDIS criteria for Therapeutic Supports, as outlined in the NDIS Practice Standards. Play therapy is an evidence-based intervention that helps children build social, emotional, and behavioural skills, supporting their NDIS goals and increasing their functional capacity, independence, and participation in the community.

If you are unsure about how to use your child’s NDIS funding for play therapy, we’re happy to assist or you can speak with your Plan Manager for more information.

We require 48 hours notice to avoid cancellation fees. Cancellation after this time will result in 100% charge of service for NDIS participants, and 50% charge for private clients as per our Cancellation Policy.

Telehealth services are available. Ask us how this works!

At Starfish Child and Family Play Therapy, the frequency of play therapy sessions depends on the specific approach and the needs of the child and family.

Individual Play Therapy (Humanistic Play Therapy and Learn to Play Therapy)

  • Weekly sessions are recommended, as consistency helps build a strong therapeutic relationship and allows progress to continue.

  • Sessions are typically held on the same day and time each week in a dedicated Play Therapy space with carefully selected materials to support emotional expression and psychological safety.

Parent-Child Therapy Approaches

For families looking to strengthen their relationships and learn therapeutic play techniques, we offer:

  • Child-Parent Relationship Therapy (CPRT) / Filial Therapy – Typically delivered in a 10-week program, with weekly group or individual sessions to help parents use play therapeutically at home.

  • Circle of Security Parenting – A group or individual program that runs over 8 weeks, focusing on understanding and strengthening parent-child attachment.

We understand that every family’s needs are different, and we are happy to discuss session frequency options to find the best fit for you and your child.
